Frequently Asked Questions

Does corten steel rust through completely?
No. Corten forms a dense, tightly bonded patina that physically limits further corrosion — unlike ordinary rust, which is porous and ongoing. In correct outdoor conditions, corten lasts 50–100 years with no paint or coating required.
How long does the corten patina take to develop?
Initial orange rust appears within weeks of first rain. Full stabilisation — where the patina becomes a protective, dark-brown layer — takes 1–3 years depending on climate and rainfall frequency.
Is corten mailbox suitable for coastal areas?
Not recommended within 1 km of salt water. Salt air can prevent the patina from stabilising correctly. For coastal installations, 316 marine-grade stainless steel is the correct choice.
Can a corten mailbox be personalised with a house number?
Yes — laser-cut house numbers, names, and patterns are cut directly through the corten face. The cutout becomes permanent, weather-proof, and improves in appearance as the patina develops around it.
